Tawang

A beautiful land of Monpa Tribe, Tawang is located in the western most part of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering China and Bhutan. Tawang is a thinly populated mountainous tract that houses a rugged terrain with deep valleys. From snow capped peaks to pleasant climate, friendly people and scenic view, Tawang entices the travelers with it natural beauty. This magical land evokes images of awesome mountain views, remote hamlets, quaint and sleepy villages, magical Gompas, tranquil lakes and mesmerizing mountains.

Attractions

One of the most visited places in Arunachal Pradesh is the Sela Pass, which is considered as heaven on earth. The Sela Mountain Pass in winter is entirely covered with snow. Before reaching this pass, the travellers are welcomed by another lake, which is known as the Paradise Lake.

Another popular attraction is the Tawang Monastery, also known as the Golden Namgyal Lhatse. It is one of the largest lamaseries of Mahayana sects. The second oldest Monastery in the entire world after Lhasa, this monastery is believed to be 400 years old with a control over 17 Gompas in the region. Dating back to 17th century, the monastery serves as the main venue for the Torgva festival, which is organised in the eleventh Monpa month.

Tawang War Memorial is another famous attraction here. This 40 foot high multi-hued memorial is constructed in the form of a stupa, and is dedicated to the martyrs of Sino-India War held in 1962. Nestled among beautiful peaks, overlooking the Tawang Chu Valley, the memorial is popularly known as Namgyal Chorten, and has names of 2,420 dead soldiers inscribed on it. The names of the soldiers are etched in gold on around 32 black granite plagues.

Another popular must visit attraction is Jaswant Garh, located at a distance of around 21 kilometre from Sela Pass towards Tawang. This Garh is home to a warrior Jaswant Singh who sacrificed his life during the war fought against Chinese soldiers. The place is open to travellers to pay a tribute and salute to this great warrior.

One of the most famous lakes of Arunachal Pradesh, Pangang Teng Tso Lake is located at a distance of 18Km from Tawang Township. Serving as one of the ideal spots for picnic, the lake remains entirely frozen during the winter season.

Best time to visit
Summer season and onset monsoon season serve as the best time to visit Tawang. The temperature remains comfortable and is appropriate for sightseeing. The favourable months to visit the destination are March, April, May, June, September and October.

How to reach Tawang
By Air: Nearest airport to Tawang is located in Tezpur (Salonibari Airport). In October 2014, Government of Arunanchal Pradesh Government started helicopter facility to connect Tawang and Guwahati. The nearest international airport to Tawang is located in Guwahati.

By Road: Arunachal Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) and other private agencies have introduced regular bus services.

By Train : Nearest railway station from Tawang is Rangapara Railway Station, and is well connected to major cities and towns of North-east India.
