The historic Aga Khan Palace, built by Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan III in 1892, is one of the popular attractions among tourists. A fine example of architectural beauty, the palace was used to imprison many freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary and Sarojini Naidu. The palace offers the perfect glimpse of Indian Fighters’ life through photographs and portraits.

Another major attraction here is the Shivneri Fort, which holds significance in the history of Maratha Empire for being the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The fort is now in ruins and houses a granary, a twin underground water tank dating back to 2,000 years ago, the temple of Shivai Devi and ‘Badami Talav’, a huge circular water tank. One can also spot the statue of child Chhatrapati Shivaji and his mother Jijabai inside the Fort.

Another remarkable attraction here is the Fort of Sinhagad, meaning “The Lion’s Fort”. The fort has witnessed various significant battles and is believed to be constructed about 1,500-2,000 years ago. Like Shivneri Fort, it is popular among trekkers.

Once a royal abode of the Peshwas, Shaniwar Wada is another major attraction in Pune. The architecture of the palace carries the influence of Mughal style. A sound and light show by Pune Municipal Corporation can also be enjoyed here.
